Apple admits half-word stop WiFi terminals (Linksys to the rescue)
Apple Inc., Wi-Fi, Linksys, AirPort, AirPort Time Capsule |
Why the hell does Apple no longer evolve its WiFi terminals? These devices are yet easy to use, configure and are still abundant in all fans of the brand. Last year, Bloomberg revealed that Apple wanted to abandon this market.
If the WiFi standards have not moved much since the last "ac" models, it is rather the signal repetition techniques that have developed. WiFi "Mesh" is indeed present on most new devices on the market (Netgear, Google, Linksys ...), and can cover large areas by limiting flow losses. The downside, these terminals are quite expensive, more than $238.
In a short message sent to 9to5Mac, Apple confirms that the products will remain for sale, but that it prefers to direct its customers to competing products for "big houses". One way to say that current products will not be updated, at least in the medium term.
"People like our AirPort products and we continue to sell them. Connectivity is important at home and we offer customers another option that suits big houses"
Too bad that Apple no longer interested in WiFi, because its solutions also embedded ways to save its data (Time Capsule) or to play music in AirPlay (AirPort Express ($130)). But Apple also seems to be the victim of a problem of "scaling", and sometimes finds itself abandoning lines of products for several years, lack of engineer to handle it full time.
